The New Year is a great time to think about overcoming an addiction. Whether it is quitting smoking, reducing or quitting alcohol, drugs, gambling, or any other behavioral addiction, there has never been more support, or more good reasons to embrace a healthy lifestyle.
Often a bad experience over the Christmas party season, such as making a fool of yourself at the office party, can make you realize you are ready to make a change.
The decision to quit is a great first step in the process, and there is a wealth of resources available on about.com. For example, practicing relaxation skills, and other stress management techniques, is extremely helpful when cravings and urges start to pull you towards relapse.
Don’t forget, planning is an important part of the process of change. If you are quitting alcohol or drugs, you may need detox to stay safe and healthy during withdrawal. And it is worth knowing about nearby support groups, such as 12 step groups, should you need the support of others during your recovery.
Good luck, and Happy New Year!
